III
“Man is used to having convictions, so there we are. We can none of us do without our hangers-on, though we despise them at the very bottom of our souls.”
-Lev Shestov
Irremovable convictions, regardless of content, indicates the presence of a real existent self. Despise at something, regardless of the content of the object of the passion, indicates the presence of a real existent self. A pointer to solid ontological being. The fact that convictions need not be universal, yet still indicate ontological existence, points to the irremovable ontological dimension of freedom. Despise at having convictions points to a real existence of freedom melded into the self. However these must be distinguished, one is not the other. The being under examination is both solid self and ungrounded freedom and both not self and not ungrounded freedom. To understand such ontological dimensions one must turn to the third neumoenal category of the Divine. Such explorations require a deeper breath of air.
